George A. Porter, MD, 1931-2011: a distinguished academic career.

On February 2, 2011, the US nephrology and internal medicine communities lost a distinguished clinician and scientist when George A. Porter, MD, died after a 2-year battle with a malignant brain tumor. At the time of his death, George was surrounded by his loving wife Marthel, the couple's 4 sons, Jack, Bob, Doug, and David, and their wives, and 5 grandchildren. He was alert to the end and accepted his death with grace and humility. George had many accomplishments in medicine and nephrology but he is widely acknowledged as the founding editor of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases from 1980-1986. George was selected as Editor-in-Chief following a national search for a clinical scholar who could develop a journal useful to nephrologists who see patients. By all criteria, he was very successful.
