The serotonin 2C receptor (5HT2CR) has been strongly implicated in the serotonergic regulation of diverse CNS phenomena, one of which is inhibitory regulation of dopaminergic pathway through activating GABAergic interneurons. However, 5HT2CR agonist, mCPP is known to induce psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, but not in well-treated schizophrenia and healthy subjects (Kiystal et al, 1993). Further, mCPP induces psychotic symptoms also in healthy subjects when administered with GABAA receptor antagonist (D'Souza et al, 2006). The neural mechanism/s underlying such 5HT2CR-mediated effects have been challenging to discern, due to the widespread CNS distribution of these receptors on heterogeneous cell types of GABAergic and non-GABAegic neurons.
