In recently, the dopamine agonist exhibit antidepressant activity has been described (Buisson et al,2002). Furthermore, it has been suggested that dopamine nerve are involved in improving symptoms of depression (Alexander et al, 1986; Nishino et al, 1987). We have investigated the antidepressant effect of ergot alkaloids. The determination of the antidepressant effect was evaluated using alearned helplessness (LH) behavioral tests which is highly similar to the clinical symptoms of depression. The research has been reported that dopamine agonists used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease have also shown effectiveness in treating patients for depression. We treated animals with the dopamine agonist pramipexole (PRM) and observed behavioral changes and changes in the function of the cranial nerves in animal models of learned helplessness.
