Sodium bicarbonate therapy and contrast-induced nephropathy.

Navaneethan et al in their meta-analysis have concluded that hydration with sodium bicarbonate decreases the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in comparison with hydration with normal saline. In this meta-analysis, all published and unpublished randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from 2004 until 2008 comparing 2 modalities of intravenous hydration were included, which highlights publication bias as mentioned by the authors. However, the largest RCT, a study by Maioli et al comparing sodium bicarbonate and normal saline in the prophylaxis of ON, was not mentioned in this meta-analysis. In this prospective single-center study
