Do the benefits of peritoneal dialysis for polycystic kidney disease wane with time?

To the Editor: In addressing whether peritoneal dialysis can be used in patients with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and end-stage renal disease, Li et al conclude that, although mechanical complications occur, survival is not affected over a long follow-up period (5 years). However, delving deeper into the survival curves of both groups, the unadjusted data show that patients with PKD fare better than the control group initially, but deteriorate after 2 to 3 years of dialysis. Abbott et al, in their study of a large population of patients with PKD receiving peritoneal dialysis in the United States, noted that patients with PKD have significantly better outcomes over 2 years than patients with other causes of kidney failure.
