Pavement Surface Deformation Monitoring by Radar Interferometry Technique

Repeated traffic and environmental loading can damage abstract Road pavement. In this report, we present an advanced technique which uses radar interferometry which computes the differential phase changes radar echoes to monitoring the deformation of the pavement surface. We introduce a method using real aperture radar (RAR) to monitor the pavement of the normal road. Using the Interferometry technique, we could distinguish the moving car and the deformation of the road surface after heavy truck could be observed. Then, we discussed a technique using ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) for an airport taxiway monitoring. The GB-SAR interferometry technique could monitor very precise and small displacement of the targets with 0.18mm accuracy. We have applied the ground control points technique to remove the atmosphere effect of the airport monitor scene. The results clearly showed that the taxiway pavement surface deformation after airplanes are passed. Moreover, we could observe the longtime vibration of the taxiway pavement surface. Compared with the deformation from the defects or anomalies area and sounding area, we could conclude that the deformation from the anomalous area is much unstable and random.
