To the Editor: The race-ethnicity coefficients (1.23 and 0.88) for using the original Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study equation in Chinese and Japanese populations are substantially different from each other despite similarities in food, lifestyle, and genetic background. We hypothesized that the different methods for measured glomerular filtration rate (mGFR), namely plasma technetium-99m-labeled diethylenetri-amine penta-acetate (~(99m)Tc-DTPA) clearance (CDTPA) and inulin renal clearance (Cin) in the Chinese and Japanese studies, respectively, may have contributed to the observed difference in race-ethnicity coefficients. In this study, we compared CDTPA and Cin simultaneously.
