Evaluation of BD Vacutainer~R Barricor~(TM) Plasma Blood Collection Tube vs. Insepack~R II-D for Selected Diagnostic Tests: Clinical Significance of Differences in Patients on Hemodialysis

Poor separation of specimens and fibrin clot formation in serum for blood testing of patients on hemodialysis (HD) are significant problems in processing samples obtained after HD. This study aimed to explore whether the results obtained with plasma tubes are compatible with those from serum and to compare qual-ity between the two methods. The possibility of using plasma instead of serum for testing of post-HD specimens was evaluated at Tai-genkai Hospital, Japan, using the BD Vacutainer~R Barricor~(TM) Plasma Blood Collection Tube and Insepack~R II-D. After specimens from 50 outpatients had been dispensed into plasma and serum tubes (and coagulated for serum), these samples were centrifuged according to the instructions provided by the manufacturers. Subsequently, 33 chemistry and immunology analytes were measured in plasma and serum, using the TBA~(TM)-120FR analyzer.
