THREE RECENT OPINIONS about patents and research have been the subject of much analysis, but the impact of the three, taken together, for university research, deserves further exploration. The three decisions provide, at least for now, answers to thefollowing questions: Are university researchers broadly exempt from suits for patent infringement? Is drug-development research specially protected from such suits? Can universities enforce reach-through claims to "target patents" against pharmaceuticalcompanies?
