Deep in the Heart of Texas'PIONEER ROSES'

The last place one might think to look for roses bred in Texas, and for its particular climate, would be New York City. Nonetheless, while strolling through the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden — part of the New York Botanical Garden — a couple years ago I came across some interesting looking varieties with unfamiliar names. Most of these varieties were of medium height with a loose, informal spray habit; they ranged through most colors and bloom forms, from single to heavily petalled. Upon further investigation, they proved to be products of G. Michael Shoup, whom I knew to be theowner of the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham, TX, up the road a piece (60 mi. NW) from Houston, but whom I did not know was also a hybridizer.
