Sandvik 12C27 is a martensitic stainless steel for knife applications. It is supplied in both the annealed or cold-rolled condition. Hardening. The hardening temperature is 1080 deg C (1975 deg F), with a holding time of 5 min, and quenching in oil. Tempering. For strip thickness 2.5 mm (0.098 in.) the tempering time is 30 min. Brittleness occurs with tempering above 450 deg C (840 deg F). See Fig. 1 and 2, which illustrate the importance of using the right hardening conditions to optimize the microstructure of the steel.
