We study the motion of meteors and calculate the speed at which they hit the Earth. The calculation is done in a rotating system where the Earth and the Sun are at rest. Our treatment is a pedagogical account of some well established celestial mechanics results, suited for presentation in an intermediate mechanics course. The impact speed of meteors in several regularly occurring meteor showers agree very well with our calculation. (C) 2014 American Association of Physics Teachers.
