Evaluation of Pharmacological Effects of Lipid Metabolism Improving Agents on Dogs

In recent years there has been alarge increase in the number of dogs with dyslipidemia that require veterinary treatment. However, no drugs have been specifically developed to improve lipid metabolism in animals, so veterinarians can only use human drugs. In Japan, dogs often are prescribed similar drug treatments as people, for example they are given the Fibrate drug Clinofibrate (CF) to treat high plasma triglyceride (TG) values, and the Statin drug Pravastatin (PS) to treat high plasma cholesterol (Cho) values. However there is little knowledge about the efficacy of these treatments on dogs. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the pharmacological effect of both of these lipid metabolism improving agents on dogs in Japan.
