摘要

The characterization of particulate materials often offers the unique scenario where a single test or measurement does not provide a comprehensive view of the true state of the material. Because of the ease of collecting data, scientists and engineers will often rely on collecting more of the same information, rather than seeking out complimentary or orthogonal techniques that will provide further insight. Additionally, one must select instrumentation that provides data that are relevant for the phase of drug development. For example, atomic force microscopy maybe a useful tool in designing a pulmonary drug delivery system, but a simpler, more appropriate test must be used by a quality control laboratory to release that drug product to the market. This paper will show how orthogonal and scale-appropriate tests can be used to produce a physical property control strategy, rather than simply generating more data.
