Survey on nematode infection of the digestive tract of adult dogs from Hachinohe area, Aomori Prefecture

1275 adult dogs, >1 year of age, were examined for nematode infection of the digestive tract. No parasites were detected in 354 dogs kept indoors, whereas 95 of 834 dogs (11.4%) kept outdoors were positive for parasites. Tosa breed dogs were most frequently affected (37.9%). Commonest isolate was Trichuris vulpis, and only a few cases of Ancylostoma caninum infestation were detected. Toxocara canis was seen in a few 1-year-old dogs. The prevalence of parasitic infestation was higher in males than females and was markedly higher in 3 to 4-year-old dogs compared with 1-year-old dogs.
