The imitation of wood has a rich history dating back to at least the time of old Egyptian King Tut - that's over 3,000 years ago. Painted wood furniture from his tomb imitated other, more desirable grains. After the Great Fire of London in 1666, real oak was reserved by royal decree exclusively for ship construction. To satiate the taste for oak-constructed houses, an English grain-painting tradition evolved that took other, more obtainable woods and made them look like oak. The skill was so great in many cases that most people believe present royal palaces to be not faux but real oak.
