Information-delivery systems evolved in honeybee colonies were classified into 5 categories: (1) one-way flow of signal transmission between 2 individuals, represented by a begging or shaking signal, (2) one-way flow from 1 to a few individuals, represented by grooming or the tail-waggling dance, (3) one-way from 1 to many, represented by queen piping, (4) relay-mannered dispersion, represented by shimmering or abdomen shaking in Apis cerana, and (5) 2- or multi-way transmission among many bees, represented by social synchronization of the clock phase or mixing of informative body surface wax. Features in the regulation of information related to the establishment of field for emission, the duration of emission, response thresholds, social modes, and storage or memory were also discussed.
