Color and Light: Using light to help choose color

It's not surprising that successful paint contractors advise clients to view color cards both in daylight and under artificial light. They know that what we perceive as "color" is nothing more than the reflection of specific wavelengths of light coming off an object or surface; when the light changes, so does the paint color. Sometimes interior paint colors look better in bright sunlight and other times in artificial light, but they always look different in different lighting conditions. One thing is certain: Colors appear darker -sometimes much darker - when light is in short supply, which is why it is usually best to suggest the lighter of two colors if a client is torn between two tones.
