Effect of hypometobolics on mitochondrial energetics

In isolated rat's liver mitochondria the hypometabolics (serotonin and katacin) are shown to block many substrates oxidation without uncoupling: shake venoms uncouple and inhibit mitochondrial respiration during oxidation of many substrates; aminooxyacetate decreases oxidation of glutamate, malate but not pyruvate and oxoglutanate; halotan blocks only NAD-linked substrates oxidation. It is discussed that the studied effects of hypometabolics may be determined by the inhibitory effects of these agents on organism energetics.
