Scots pine renewal dynamics during postfire recovery of boreal pine forests.

The renewal dynamics of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) was studied in pine forests of the northern taiga in Russia. Investigations were carried out in two groups of associations, lichen and moss ones. Sampling sites represent associations burned at different time (4 to 210 years ago) and contained different amount of fire-killed trees ( < 30 and > 70% of the stand density). According to postfire recovery chronosequence, the following characteristics were analysed the regrowth density, its spatial distribution and species structure. Three main stages of postfire recovery process were distinguished. Significance of postfire outbreaks of seedling density is discussed.
