Dot immunobinding assay (DIBA) and indirect ELISA were used to detect LSV, TBV-L and CMV in the scale-segments of Lilium X Enchantment. Absorbance values of LSV in leaves which were collected from the lower, middle and upper parts of the stem, perianths and bracts were determined at 405 nm by ELISA. The absorbance of leaves collected at various times during the growing period was determined based on the most reliable LSV absorbance value, which was obtained from the basal parts of leaves located onthe upper part of the stem. Leaf LSV values increased gradually toward anthesis. While leaves excised from the upper part of the stem had a higher concentration of LSV than those from the lower part in L. X Enchantment and L. X Star Gazer, the reverse was true in L. formosanum. Basal parts of leaves collected from the upper part of the stem of 550 individual plants of 18 Lilium spp. growing in the field at anthesis were examined for the presence of the 3 viruses by DIBA. One or more viruses were detected in 73% of the plants. The frequencies of LSV, TBV-L, and CMV occurring alone in the population were 52.4, 1.6 and 0.9%, respectively, the remaining 18% being infected with 2 or 3 viruses. Lilium spp. infected with LSV were nearly symptomless. Leaves of plants of L. rubellum infected with LSV and TBV-L developed green stripe mosaic. Infection with TBV-L or CMV in addition to LSV reduced the stem elongation of plants of Casablanca, Hinomoto, Enchantment and Star Gazer compared to infection with LSV alone.
