Determination of ochratoxin A in commercial coffee, wine, grape juice, and beer in Japan.

Immunoaffinity column (IAC)-linked HPLC was used to determine ochratoxin A (OTA) in samples of coffee, wine, grape juice and beer collected in Japan. Nine out of ten canned coffee samples were positive (detection limit of 3 pg/ml). All 12 instant coffee samples were positive, whereas all 10 regular coffee samples were negative (detection limit of 60 pg/g). The averages of OTA in canned and instant coffee were 28.000 and 1.225 pg/g, respectively. Eighteen out of forty-four red wine samples were positive (detection limit of 3 pg/ml), with an average of 46 pg/ml, and 6 out of 20 red wine samples made in Japan were contaminated with an average of 4 pg/ml. All 5 red wine samples made in Italy and 7 red wine samples from France were contaminated with OTA, at average levels of 47 and 77 pg/ml, respectively. OTA was not detected in any red wine samples from USA, Australia, Chile and South Africa. One out of 5 white wine samples, 3 out of 5 rose wines and 2 out of 12 grape juice samples were positive for OTA, with averages of 6, 24 and 6 pg/ml, respectively. Thirteen of 20 beer samples were contaminated with OTA, with an average of 11 pg/ml.
