Hairy root cultures of A. annua were cultivated for 25 days at 25deg C with photoperiod 12 h/day in 4 culture systems: a flask, a bubble column, a modified bubble column and a modified inner-loop airlift bioreactor. The artemisinin contents of hairy root cultures in the bubble column and the modified inner-loop airlift bioreactor were higher than that in the modified bubble column. The growth rate and hairy root distribution in the modified inner-loop airlift bioreactor were better than those in otherbioreactors; dry weight and artemisinin production reached 26.8 g/litre and 536 mg/litre after 20 days (when the biomass filled the reactor).
