Enhanced expression of the ribulose-bisphosphate small subunit (rbcS3A) promoter was achieved by overproducing phytochrome in BY-2 tobacco cells. The transformed cells contained the oat phytochrome A gene fused to the 35S promoter of cauliflower mosaic caulimovirus (CaMV) and the gus gene fused to the rbcS3A promoter. The transformed cells exhibited 1.5-2.8-fold increases in beta-glucuronidase (GUS) activity when subjected to light.
