Advantages and disadvantages of Internet technology in the management of diabetes

After more than 20 years, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes among our patients has reached 9.7%. When a glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level >6.5% is used as the diagnostic criterion for diabetes, this prevalence increases to 11.6%. China may develop the largest population of patients with diabetes globally. Due to the chronic nature of diabetes mellitus, the relative shortage of medical resources, and the huge diabetes population, the use of Internet technology to manage patients with diabetes has become a trend. Since 2014, Lanzhou Ruijing Diabetes Hospital has used Internet technology to manage diabetes patients. Here, we analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the use of Internet technology and medical services for diabetes management to improve and develop management methods to achieve improved monitoring and treatment of diabetes.
