In 1996, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) concluded that there was insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening asymptomatic patients for carotid artery stenosis, by either physical examination or carotid ultraso-nography. In December of 2007, the USPSTF updated their recommendation. They now recommend against screening for asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis in the general population. The USPSTF identified this as a "Grade D" recommendation, which means "there is moderate or high certainty that the service has no net benefit or that the harms outweigh the benefits."(p. 858)
