Prevalence of coccidiosis in rabbits from five semi organized rabbit farms of Mathura: A preliminary study

A study was performed to assess the prevalence of coccidiosis in rabbits of Mathura region and to identify the main species involved. Five semi organized rabbit farms were selected and a total of 183 rabbits were screened. An overall prevalence rate of 54% was recorded. Mixed coccidian infections were found to be far more common (84%) than single infections (16%). The collected pooled samples were also in vitro sporulated to identify the species based on sporulated oocysts characters. Alongside, oocysts were identified using online COCCEMORPH software. Eimera stiedae, E. media, E. perforans and E. magna were identified based on oocyst characters and software analysis. This appears to be first organized epidemiological study related to rabbit coccidiosis from Mathura.
