Efficacy of flumethrin pour-on against tick infestation on cattle and buffaloes.

The efficacy of flumethrin pour-on (Bayticol) against natural tick infestation in cattle and buffaloes was evaluated in a field trial. A total of 54 animals (20 cattle and 34 buffaloes) from villages in Mathura (Maharashtra, India), naturally infested with Boophilus microplus and Hyalomma spp., were selected. The animals were divided into 2 groups (A and B), consisting of 10 cattle and 17 buffaloes each. Group A animals were treated with flumethrin pour-on (1.0 mg/kg body weight), whereas group B animals were administered water. The number of ticks were recorded on each of the animals at day 0 (day of treatment) and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60, post-treatment. The average number of ticks on day 0 ranged between 18.30 and 43.00 per animal. In group A, no live ticks were detected on day 1. The dead ticks were found attached to the body of treated animals; they looked flat, wrinkled, discoloured and dried-up. The treated animals were free of ticks for a period of 15-60 days post-treatment. Onthe other hand, the untreated animals had ticks, ranging between 21.18 and 68.40, until the end of the trial. The drug was quite safe, and no untoward effects were detected in any of the treated animals.
