摘要

Use of single-cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) as an analytical tool for studying effects of dietary antioxidants is reviewed. Individual aspects considered include: principles of comet assay for studying in vitro and in vivo effects of DNA damage/protection; studies examining effects of dietary vitamin C and vitamin E on DNA using the comet assay; studies on effects of other dietary antioxidants (e.g. carotenoids and flavonoids); interpretation of comet assay results (assessment of potential pro-oxidative vs. antioxidative activity); and benefits and limitations of the comet assay for evaluating effects of dietary antioxidant compounds.
