SHORT COMMUNICATION: Allelopathic potential of soapnut [Sapindus trifoliatus L.] on sudangrass [Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf] seed biology

Allelopathic interaction plays a major role in the crop field of sudangrass [Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf, family Poaceae] with soapnut trees [Sapindus trifoliatus L., family Sapindaceae]. The allelopathic potential of ripened fruit leachates of soapnut tree under such conditions may influence the seeds and seedlings of sudangrass. Soapnut, a deciduous tree of the family Sapindaceae grows in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, chiefly in mdo-Malaysian region (12,13). In India, its fourspp are: Sapindus trifoliatus L. syn. S. laurifolius Vahl. (South Indian soapnut), S. mukorossi Gaerm. (North Indian soapnut), S. rarak DC. (found in Assam), S. laurifolius Vahl. or S. trifoliatus var. emarginatus (Vahl.) Ralk. The S. trifoliatus L is cultivated in West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (13). Farmers grow the sudangrass as understorey crop with soapnut trees, but its growth and development is reduced.
