All communications channels are subject to errors in its en route as a result of additive Gaussian noise. Data perturbations cannot be eliminated but their effect can be minimized by the use of error correcting techniques such as forward error detection (FEC) in the transmitted data streams and decodes in the receiving systems that detect and correct bits in error. Convolutional encoding is the preferred method of error-correction coding to overcome transmission distortions as employed in GSM etc. The principles of Fuzzy sets apply quite well to this situation. We have done the fuzzy inference patterns for the chosen encoding scheme. Then, the decoding could include the confidence levels of the received signal also as a fuzzy variable. The method of decoding is also augmented by the so-called soft decoding principle. This takes into account the actual received analog signal's confidence level in determining the bits. So far, no technique based on the use of the principles of soft computation has been attempted in this complex process of decoding convolutionally encoded data.
