Allelopathic effects of weed leaf leachates on seed germination of black gram (Phaseolus mungo L.).

The effects of leachates from the leaves of Ageratum conyzoides, Anagallis arvensis, Eclipta alba, Lippia nodiflora, Parthenium hysterophorus, Phyllanthus niruri, Pluchea lanceolata and Polygonum plebeium on the germination of black gram cultivars P-19 and PU-35 were studied. Seeds of each cultivar were placed in petri dishes containing 10, 20, 30 or 40% of leachate of each weed species. The number of germinated seeds was evaluated at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 days after sowing (DAS), whereas seedling growth was evaluated at 5 DAS. The increase in leachate concentration was associated with the increase in the reduction of seed germination and seedling growth. All leachates at 10% significantly reduced seed germination and root length in both cultivars. At 10% leachate concentration, the greatest inhibition of seed germination in P-19 (48.3%) and PU-35 (57.4%) was attributed to Phyllanthus niruri. The greatest inhibition of seedling growth in P-19 (37.5%) and PU-35 (44.7%) was caused by Parthenium hysterophorus.
