The effects of aqueous extracts (6550 ppm) of C. ladanifer and L. stoechas leaves on the germination and growth of wheat (cv. Anza) and P. minor were studied. Seeds of wheat or P. minor were placed in petri dishes containing soil treated with each of the extracts. After 15 (wheat) or 34 days (P. minor), the number of seeds that germinated and the number of seedlings that developed roots and leaves were evaluated. No significant effect on total germination was observed in both species. All P. minor seedlings developed root and leaf systems, while some germinated seeds of wheat did not. The wheat seeds that did not germinate in soil also failed to germinate in petri dishes. The extracts did not have significant effects on the number of leaves and shoot length of P. minor, but significantly reduced the number of leaves in wheat. The shoot length of wheat was not affected by the extract of L. stoechas, but was reduced by the extract of C. ladanifer in one replicate. The treatments did not have significant effects on shoot/root ratio, and root, shoot and total dry weights of wheat, whereas the L. stoechas extract reduced P. minor root and total dry weights. On average, L. stoechas extract was more inhibitory to P. minor than to wheat.
