Thomas Renton Elliott (1877-1961) died in 1961. In 1904, he demonstrated that the sympathetic nervous system released an adrenlin-like substance on the smooth muscles. He is often cited for the theory that the adrenalin-secreting cells of the adrenal medulla and the postganglionic sympathetic neurons have not only common features but also a common parentage, the neural crest.
