Ecdysis is essentially the separation of the old, outer cuticle from the newly developed, underlying cuticle. The process often begins weeks before you see them mou they are busy growing a new exoskeleton underneath the existing one. When the time comes, the tarantula will often turn over onto it's 'back', ecdysial fluids in the epidermal cells are secreted between the exuvial space, dissolving the endocuticle gradually. At the same time, the space between the two cuticles is thoroughly lubricated and allows the old one to be pushed off by muscle contractions and haemolymph movement.
