Insight into the phase equilibria, intermetallic compounds, solid solution and thermodynamic properties of the system of Zr, Si and rare earth elements is of academic interest for development of key structural materials in many fields. In this work, the solid state phase equilibria of the Si-Y-Zr ternary system at 1173?K were experimentally investigated by using x-ray powder diffraction and backscattered electron with energy dispersive x-ray analysis. The existence of 10 binary compounds namely, SiZr~(2), α-Si~(4)Zr~(5), Si~(2)Zr~(3), Si~(2)Zr, α-SiZr, α-Si~(2)Y, β-Si~(5)Y~(3), SiY, Si~(4)Y~(5)and Si~(3)Y~(5), have been confirmed in this system at 1173?K, respectively. No binary compound was found in the Y-Zr binary system, and no ternary compound was found in current ternary system. The solid solubility of Y in the phases SiZr~(2), α-Si~(4)Zr~(5), Si~(2)Zr~(3), Si~(2)Zr, α-SiZr, and Zr in α-Si~(2)Y, β-Si~(5)Y~(3), SiY, Si~(4)Y~(5)and Si~(3)Y~(5)was determined at 1173?K.
