Tolerability and effect of mesalazine in postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome.

Sirs, We read with interest the work of Corinaldesi et al. addressing the effect of mesalazine (mesalamine) treatment in irritable bowel syndrome. Although global improvement and a significant reduction in colonic immune cells was found in the 10 patients receiving 800 mg mesalazine three times daily for 8 weeks, improvement in hallmark symptoms like pain and bloating were more difficult to demonstrate.
