Release of potassium from non-exchangeable sources in eight soils,four representing forest eco-system and four under agriculture eco-system,in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh was assessed in greenhouse through exhaustive cropping using two crops each of wheat and maize.On an average,non-exchangeable K contributed 51,69,80 and 92 per cent of total K uptake by four successive crops.When K-release from non-exchangeable sources was assessed by a laboratory technique,the values obtained after each crop were 54,65,81 and 92 per cent thereby indicating that a close agreement existed between the two methods.The K-release pattern in agricultural soils was more pronounced than in those under forest ecosystem.
