Response of Rice Varieties to Potassium Levels in an Acidic Peat Soil of Manipur Valley

A field experiment was conducted in an acid peat soil of Manipur valley at Lamphelpat research farm,(latitude and altitude 24 deg .30' N,94 deg E and 781 m msl,respectively)Imphal during kharif season of 2000 and 2001 (2 years)to study the growth and yield responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.)varieties (RCM-9,KD 2-6-3,Prasad and Pusa 743)to application of different level of potassium.Higher values of plant height,number of effective tillers per hill,panicle length,number of filled grains/panicle,grain and straw yield and harvest index were noticed with 60 kg ha~(-1)potassium application and it was significantly superior over 40 kg and 20 kg K_2O ha~(-1)as well as control.However,highest number of unfilled (chaffy)grains per panicle was recorded in control (no potassium)and it was significantly reduced by 20 kg,40 kg and 60 kg K_2O ha~(-1).The minimum number of unfilled grains/panicle was noticed under 60 kg K_2O ha~(-1)The K content and uptake by rice grain and straw increased significantly with successive increase in potassium levels.
