Investigation of mix design and properties of geopolymers for application as wellbore cement

In recent years, there has been a tremendous research geared toward using environmental friendly material to replace Portland cement. Most of the research and study carried out so far has been in the concrete and construction industry while the oil and gas industry which primarily uses Portland cement in cementing operations is almost being left out. The environmental problems and enormous energy required in the production of Portland cement cannot be overemphasized, there is need to find a substitute material. In this paper we have carried out experimental work on how effective fly ash based geopolymer can be applied in oil and gas wells, and also try to improve the performance where necessary. This research work involves conducing industrial standard material, and setting time test for different mixture design of the developed fly ash based geopolymers. Furthermore, some morphology analysis has been provided by conducting some SEM (Scan Electron Microscopy) tests.
