Pruritus ani is a common symptom characterised by an unpleasant cutaneous sensation that prompts scratching of the anal canal or the skin of the anal verge. Pruritus ani is thought to affect up to 5% of the population. Amongst anorectal symptoms, pruritus ani accounts for 24?o of GP visits and 18% of anorectal consultations with a gastroenterologist. More than half of patients have often had pruritus ani for over a year before presenting for treatment.
