A magnetic cationic resorcinol/formaldehyde resin (Fe3O4@CTAB-RF) was synthesized and applied to the magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction (MDSPE) process for the first time. The cationic surfactant was introduced into the magnetic resorcinol/formaldehyde resin to increase the electrostatic interaction between the resin and the phenolic analytes. Fe3O4@CTAB-RF can also interact with the analytes through hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions which are intrinsic of resorcinol/formaldehyde resin. It was successfully applied to the MDSPE of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) such as bisphenol A (BPA) and alkylphenols from food contacting material migrants with the aid of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Extraction parameters such as adsorbent dose, sample pH, NaCl concentration, adsorbent time and desorption time were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection were in the range of 1.1-1.9 ng/mL and the recoveries were in the range of 90.6-99.5%.
