摘要

Cell-based interventions (CBIs) on the brain could change our personal identity, and CBIs could be used for enhancement—two alterations of our personality that are often feared when they are not intended. But even when intended, certain changes are feared: some enhancements looked for by certain persons are rejected by others, and psychiatric treatments are not always welcome by patients: as Emil Coccaro stated, “Some people didn’t like being on lithium. The folks that like being on lithium were the ones who felt that the aggressive behaviorwas not a desired trait, that itwas ego dystonic for them.Andthey like lithium, they like being treated. Other people who had incorporated aggressive behavior as part of who they were hated lithium” (Coccaro 2004, 10). Lithium induces a change in behavior for the better; in this sense, the change is an enhancement. Sometimes it is a recovery of personal identity (when the aggressiveness treated is perceived as something alien), sometimes it is a loss of identity.
