摘要

Appealing to bioethical principles cannot fully resolve the difficulties of personhood. People have multiple identities. For any person, “identity” exists on a spectrum from fully individual to fully shared. Values and preferences are constructed to varying degrees through the helpful and unhelpful interventions of others (Epstein and Peters 2009). However, as Entwistle reminds us (Entwistle et al. 2010), effective communication provides the possibility of multiple perspectives when there was previously only one, possibly subverting the “controlling influence” of a single frame of mind, whether individual or shared.
