An 85-year-old man with advanced dementia presents to your office accompanied by his daughter. She is upset because he has been increasingly agitated and combative in the evenings. He sometimes behaves as if he were hallucinating. You wonder if antidepressants can improve his symptoms. Clinical Question Are antidepressants effective in managing neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as psychosis or agitation, in patients with dementia?
