The focus of most of modern Western medicine is to heal patients when they are sick. Recently, however, there has been a greater emphasis on improving the quality of life of patients when that is all that can be accomplished. The American Medical Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded an entire program for physicians, the Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care Project, to emphasize care of patients near the end of life.
