This paper examined the of influence of a four-week intoxication with cadmium (fed with drinking water - 50 mg/dm~3), a single dose of fenitrothion (50 mg/kg body weight) and corporate intoxication of these compounds on the vitamin A and carotene concentrations in chick livers. Additionally, intoxicated animals were given selenium (1 40 mg/dm~3). The results showed that intoxication with cadmium leads to a significant decrease in vitamin A and carotene concentration in chick livers. The decrease continued for 21 days after the intoxication process was finished. The presence of selenium in feed significantly diminished the cadmium effect. A single dose of fenitrothion lead to a significant increase in vitamin A in the livers which continued for 7 days. Fenitrothion given to the chicks daring intoxication "compensated" for the toxic cadmium effects. A clear decrease in vitamin A and carotene in the liver was observed on the 21st day after intoxication completion. The achieved results show that it is advisable to feed selenium to animals that are endangered with cadmium and how necessary it is to continue research into mixed intoxication with cadmium and fenitrothion.
