Alkalosis was induced by feeding high protein diet for 3 months before parturition to 12 Polish Lowland Black-and-White cows aged 4 to 6 years. The cows remained clinically healthy throughout the experiment but passed very hard faeces. Cows showed pH 7.54 and BE +5.06 mEq/litre in the arterial blood on the day of parturition. Blood chemistry showed increased concentration of total bilirubin (11.65deg 2.15) and urea (8.94deg 1.84) as compared to the results before the experiment (5.90deg 1.10, 4.31deg 1.10 mmol/litre respectively). Mean birth weight of 12 calves born was 22-27 kg and 2 died immediately after parturition. All calves were born with metabolic alkalosis and pH 7.44, BE +5.31 mEq/litre were found in venous blood.
