Haematology in piglets infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

Blood samples were collected 3 times (I, II and III sampling) at 14-days intervals from 20 4-week-old piglets born to sows positive for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus. Significant decreases in leukocyte and lymphocyte counts between samplings I and II and I and III were found. Haemoglobin concentration significantly decreased between samplings I and II. Monocyte count significantly increased between samplings I and II. It was concluded that sows infected with PRRS virusproduced immunosuppressed piglets.
