Use of Lydium-KLP [lysozyme] in the prevention of diseases in the perinatal period in sows

In studies of 120 pregnant sows weighing 208 kg, 60 animals were injected i.m. with Lydium-KLP at 0.02 mg dimer lysozyme/kg body weight 10 days before parturition (group I). 60 sows were controls. MMA syndrome was diagnosed in 11.7% and 41.7% of sows and early mortality of piglets until 7 days of age was 9% and 12.2% in groups I and II, respectively. Analysis of blood samples collected from 20 sows in both groups before treatment and 10 days after parturition showed significant increase in the phagocytic activity in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (by 65.2%) and in the percentage of NBT positive neutrophils (37.2%) in group I. A significant increase in the concentration of total proteins including albumin, alpha-globulin and gamma-globulin fractionswas noted in group I. It is concluded that injection of Lydium-LKP had beneficial effects on the health of sows in the puerperal period.
